State of the Union: Power Rankings

🏀 STATE OF THE UNION — After Week 8

1. 🌲 Forestline — 7–1 (—)

They finally lost, but 84–82 to a much healthier Legacy team isn't enough to knock them off the top. They still have the strongest eight-game résumé by a considerable margin. The undefeated aura is gone; the #1 ranking isn't.

2. 🛡️ Vanguard — 5–3 (—)

Week 8 actually strengthened the argument we made for putting them #2. Javonte returned and immediately went 25/10/4, Aaron gave them 17/9, Vince added 15/11, and they survived a very good performance from Equilibrium. The version of Vanguard we were projecting is beginning to actually appear.

3. ⚡ Voltage — 5–3 (—)

Ruach dropping 31/16/3 with 2 steals and 2 blocks is another reminder of their ceiling. Caleb was tremendous and closed the game, while Albert made the huge defensive play late. They're 5–3 and the new pieces are beginning to show exactly why Voltage made that trade.

4. 🦁 Legacy — 4–4 (⬆️ 2)

Biggest riser. This is exactly why we kept saying their record wasn't telling the whole story. Benjamin Blackman-Smith finally returned, Kyle delivered 22/7, TV and Oliver scored 18 apiece — and Legacy became the first team to beat Forestline. A healthy Legacy is a completely different proposition.

5. 🎯 Precision — 4–4 (⬇️ 1)

Dropping Precision after that comeback feels strange, because coming back from 20 down with seven minutes remaining was incredible. Tristan's 38-point performance was the best individual performance of Week 8. But Power Rankings are about right now, too — and we already know Tristan is unavailable for Week 9. Their ceiling remains enormous; their availability remains the thing preventing me from ranking them higher.

6. 💜 Pulse — 2–6 (⬇️ 1)

I still think they're considerably better than 2–6. They lost to Forestline by two in OT and followed it by losing to Voltage by four in a game tied with under 20 seconds remaining. Now Brandon Christenson joins Jeville, Andrew and Jacob White. But eventually “almost” has to become wins. Six losses can't be completely ignored.

7. 🦉 Equilibrium — 3–5 (—)

Honestly, their 81–78 loss to Vanguard made me feel better about them. Russ scored 31, Benton went 17/15, they shot 49.1% overall and 44.4% from three, and they had an opportunity to tie on the final possession. The problem is Week 9: Russ is out and Benton is questionable. We've already seen how dramatically their floor falls when those two disappear.

8. 🦅 Elevation — 2–6 (—)

This is a much better basketball team than the one that earned most of that 2–6 record. They were seven minutes away from beating Precision and led by 20 before everything unraveled. Frankie looks excellent, Tito continues to contribute everywhere, and Andre/Dilan give them physicality. Now Brandon is gone and Malachi Redman arrives, so the roster changes again. They're dangerous — but blowing a 20-point fourth-quarter lead isn't enough to move them yet.

👻 THE PHANTOM'S WEEK 8 BOARD

1. 🌲 Forestline — 7–1 —
2. 🛡️ Vanguard — 5–3 —
3. ⚡ Voltage — 5–3 —
4. 🦁 Legacy — 4–4 — ⬆️2
5. 🎯 Precision — 4–4 — ⬇️1
6. 💜 Pulse — 2–6 — ⬇️1
7. 🦉 Equilibrium — 3–5 —
8. 🦅 Elevation — 2–6 —

The interesting part to me is #2–#5. I don't think there's much separation anymore.

Forestline still has the best body of work. Then Vanguard, Voltage, Legacy and Precision all have legitimate arguments depending on who's actually available.

And Legacy is the team whose Week 8 result most changed my opinion. We spent seven weeks ranking the hypothetical version of Legacy. Against Forestline, we finally got a glimpse of it.

Week 9 could scramble this again: Vanguard–Pulse, Elevation–Forestline, Precision–Equilibrium and Legacy–Voltage are next.
